Dazzling and dotty
I THINK it was Henri Matisse who made that pithy comment about artistic licence.
When a critic, while looking at one of his paintings, said 'That woman's arm is too long', Matisse replied: 'You think you are looking at a woman, but you're looking at a painting.'
His comment came to mind when I was composing this picture. The woman dancer's right leg is clearly too long if the painting is considered purely as a representational piece. But I think it is artistically right because it serves the purpose of the picture, which is to capture the extravagance and vigour of the dance.
The print is called Rave-up. I like the dots. If you're having trouble getting to sleep, try counting them.
