The looming cranes of Vauxhall
ON my recent visit to London, I used my free bus pass to good effect, travelling the length and breadth of the capital in my favourite front seat on the upper deck, taking in the sights and marvelling at my good fortune as a fare-free pensioner.
One of my most enduring memories of these excursions was an image that confronted me every time I crossed the Thames into Vauxhall bus station. There, criss-crossing the skyline, was an assemblage of tall cranes, a striking entanglement of jibs and loads, their gaunt frames etched into a blue backdrop, the shades of which changed with the time of day.
There was something about them that compelled me to produce this simple but effective image called Vauxhall Cranes, London 2019. It will forever remind me of a pleasant summer visit to a city which was my workplace for the best part of a decade in the 1970s and 1980s.
