Motorway madness in black and white
FOR several years in the 1970s and 1980s, I drove to work down the M1 motorway, the busiest in Britain.
Twice in fairly quick succession, I narrowly missed major motorway disasters, one of which claimed eleven lives.
Countless times I found myself in situations like the one depicted above.
Motorway commuting was something I happily left behind when I moved from the Home Counties to the West Country in the 1980s.
This picture captures some of the hellishness involved when traffic comes to a standstill. It's called Motorway Hold-up. That's all.
