In Memory of Old Fleet Street

FLEET STREET in central London was a haunt of mine during the 1970s and early 1980s when I worked for Reuters and the Thomson Organisation.

I've fallen out of most of its bars over the years, and used to attend Boxing Writers Club lunch meetings every month at the Old Cheshire Cheese, the most famous newspaper pub of all.

A few days ago I saw a superb Edwardian photograph of The Street, with horse-drawn buses and carts jostling for position on the crowded highway.

It inspired me to produce my own stylised depiction of an area I knew well for a significant period of my newspaper career. Even long after I had left London, and was working in the Bahamas, I used to interview job applicants at the Cheshire Cheese, just for old time's sake.

Anyway, here it is, Old Fleet Street, in memory of an era when newspapers were at the height of their power and influence.
